Franc shock

The franc shock denotes the abrupt appreciation of the franc after the minimum exchange rate was abandoned on 15 January 2015. Within minutes the euro fell below parity and the stock market collapsed. Exporters, tourism and retailing came under margin pressure, and cross-border shopping increased. Firms responded with efficiency gains, outsourcing and in part longer working hours. The feared recession did not materialise, but the episode showed the vulnerability of a small open economy with a safe-haven currency.

Als Frankenschock wird die abrupte Aufwertung des Frankens nach der Aufhebung des Mindestkurses am 15. Januar 2015 bezeichnet. Der Euro fiel innert Minuten unter die Parität, die Börse brach ein. Exportindustrie, Tourismus und Detailhandel gerieten unter Margendruck; der Einkaufstourismus nahm zu. Die Unternehmen reagierten mit Effizienzsteigerungen, Auslagerungen und teils längerer Arbeitszeit. Eine befürchtete Rezession blieb aus, doch die Episode zeigte die Verwundbarkeit einer kleinen offenen Volkswirtschaft mit einer Fluchtwährung.
