Fundamental attribution error

The fundamental attribution error denotes the tendency to trace others' behaviour to their personality while underestimating the power of circumstances, and to do the reverse for one's own behaviour. Someone who arrives late is unreliable; when we ourselves are late, we were stuck in traffic. In leadership the error leads to performance problems being ascribed to the person, while processes, resources and conflicting objectives go unexamined.

Der fundamentale Attributionsfehler bezeichnet die Neigung, das Verhalten anderer auf deren Persönlichkeit zurückzuführen und die Macht der Umstände zu unterschätzen, beim eigenen Verhalten dagegen umgekehrt zu verfahren. Wer zu spät kommt, ist unzuverlässig; wer selbst zu spät kommt, stand im Stau. In der Führung führt der Fehler dazu, dass Leistungsprobleme der Person zugeschrieben werden, während Prozesse, Ressourcen und Zielkonflikte unbesehen bleiben.
