Mentoring

Mentoring is the longer-term support of a less experienced person by an experienced one who passes on knowledge, contacts and advice. Unlike coaching, it foregrounds substantive experience. Mentoring accelerates socialisation into an organisation and opens up the informal networks that are often more decisive for advancement than performance is. It is therefore used deliberately to promote groups that are under-represented in leadership positions.

Mentoring ist die längerfristige Begleitung einer weniger erfahrenen Person durch eine erfahrene, die ihr Wissen, Kontakte und Rat weitergibt. Anders als beim Coaching steht die inhaltliche Erfahrung im Vordergrund. Mentoring beschleunigt die Sozialisation in eine Organisation und erschliesst informelle Netzwerke, die für den Aufstieg oft entscheidender sind als die Leistung. Es wird deshalb gezielt zur Förderung von Gruppen eingesetzt, die in Führungspositionen untervertreten sind.
