Self-efficacy, as described by Albert Bandura, is the conviction that one can master a task by one's own effort. It influences the goals a person sets, the effort expended and the handling of setbacks. It is fed above all by one's own experiences of success, then by observing role models, by encouragement, and by how bodily arousal is interpreted. Leadership strengthens it through graduated tasks that are just about manageable.

Selbstwirksamkeit ist die von Albert Bandura beschriebene Überzeugung, eine Aufgabe aus eigener Kraft bewältigen zu können. Sie beeinflusst, welche Ziele sich jemand setzt, wie viel Anstrengung er aufwendet und wie er mit Rückschlägen umgeht. Sie speist sich vor allem aus eigenen Erfolgserlebnissen, sodann aus dem Beobachten von Vorbildern, aus Ermutigung und aus der Deutung körperlicher Erregung. Führung stärkt sie durch abgestufte, gerade noch bewältigbare Aufgaben.
