Self-fulfilling prophecy

The self-fulfilling prophecy denotes the process described by Robert Merton in which an expectation, initially false, triggers behaviour that subsequently makes it come true. A manager who considers an employee incapable gives him less demanding tasks, less feedback and less trust, whereupon his performance does indeed decline. The process runs unnoticed and appears to confirm the original judgment.

Die selbsterfüllende Prophezeiung bezeichnet den von Robert Merton beschriebenen Vorgang, bei dem eine zunächst unzutreffende Erwartung ein Verhalten auslöst, das sie nachträglich wahr werden lässt. Wer einen Mitarbeitenden für unfähig hält, gibt ihm weniger anspruchsvolle Aufgaben, weniger Rückmeldung und weniger Vertrauen, worauf dessen Leistung tatsächlich sinkt. Der Vorgang läuft unbemerkt ab und bestätigt scheinbar das ursprüngliche Urteil.
