Span of control

The span of control denotes the number of employees reporting directly to one manager. A narrow span allows intensive support but creates many hierarchical levels, long information paths and high costs. A wide span produces flat structures and compels delegation, but carries the risk of overload. The optimal span depends on the complexity of the task, the qualification of the employees and the degree of standardisation; general rules of thumb are of little help.

Die Führungsspanne bezeichnet die Zahl der Mitarbeitenden, die einer Führungskraft unmittelbar unterstellt sind. Eine enge Spanne erlaubt intensive Betreuung, erzeugt aber viele Hierarchiestufen, lange Informationswege und hohe Kosten. Eine weite Spanne führt zu flachen Strukturen und zwingt zur Delegation, birgt aber die Gefahr der Überforderung. Die optimale Spanne hängt von Aufgabenkomplexität, Qualifikation der Mitarbeitenden und Standardisierungsgrad ab; pauschale Richtwerte sind wenig hilfreich.
