A stablecoin is a token whose value is pegged to a stable reference, usually a currency such as the dollar. The peg is maintained through a reserve of cash and government bonds, through pledged crypto-assets, or algorithmically. Depending on its design, FINMA treats a stablecoin as a deposit, a collective investment scheme or a security; issuing one may require a banking licence. The collapse of the algorithmic TerraUSD in 2022 laid bare the fragility of unbacked models.

Ein Stablecoin ist ein Token, dessen Wert an eine stabile Referenzgrösse gekoppelt ist, meist an eine Währung wie den Dollar. Die Bindung wird über eine Reserve aus Bargeld und Staatsanleihen, über hinterlegte Kryptowerte oder algorithmisch hergestellt. Die FINMA behandelt Stablecoins je nach Ausgestaltung als Einlage, kollektive Kapitalanlage oder Effekte; die Herausgabe kann eine Bankbewilligung erfordern. Der Zusammenbruch des algorithmischen TerraUSD im Jahr 2022 führte die Fragilität unbesicherter Modelle vor Augen.
