Richard Lazarus's transactional stress model understands stress not as a property of the situation but as the result of appraisal. In the primary appraisal the person judges whether a demand is threatening; in the secondary, whether she has sufficient means of coping. Stress arises where demands and resources diverge. It follows that the same burden affects people very differently, and that leadership can act on both sides: on the demands and on the resources.

Das transaktionale Stressmodell von Richard Lazarus versteht Stress nicht als Eigenschaft der Situation, sondern als Ergebnis einer Bewertung. In der primären Bewertung prüft die Person, ob eine Anforderung bedrohlich ist; in der sekundären, ob sie über ausreichende Bewältigungsmöglichkeiten verfügt. Stress entsteht, wo Anforderung und Ressourcen auseinanderklaffen. Daraus folgt, dass dieselbe Belastung sehr unterschiedlich wirkt und dass Führung an beiden Seiten ansetzen kann: an den Anforderungen und an den Ressourcen.
