Exclusion criteria are the sustainable investment approach under which certain issuers, sectors or practices are removed from the investment universe, for example controversial weapons, coal, tobacco or severe breaches of the UN Global Compact. Norm-based, values-based and legally mandatory exclusions are distinguished; thus the War Material Act prohibits the financing of banned weapons. Exclusions are the oldest and most widespread approach to sustainable investing and are often combined with other approaches.

Ausschlusskriterien sind der nachhaltige Anlageansatz, bei dem bestimmte Emittenten, Branchen oder Praktiken vom Anlageuniversum ausgeschlossen werden, etwa geächtete Waffen, Kohle, Tabak oder schwere Verstösse gegen den UN Global Compact. Unterschieden werden normbasierte, wertbasierte und rechtlich zwingende Ausschlüsse; so verbietet das Kriegsmaterialgesetz die Finanzierung verbotener Waffen. Ausschlüsse sind der älteste und verbreitetste Ansatz des nachhaltigen Anlegens und werden oft mit anderen Ansätzen kombiniert.
