Expanding the pie is the systematic development of additional solution possibilities before evaluation and decision. Techniques include brainstorming without criticism, separating inventing from judging, adding further issues to the negotiation, and package or trade-off solutions. In mediation the option phase is a distinct stage of the process; it prevents premature fixation on the first available solution.
