Group cohesion

Group cohesion denotes the bond of a group, that is, the sum of the forces that tie the members to it. It increases communication, satisfaction and retention. It affects performance positively only where the group's norms are performance-oriented; in a group with low norms, high cohesion actually reinforces holding back. Excessive cohesion also encourages groupthink and insulation from the environment.

Gruppenkohäsion bezeichnet den Zusammenhalt einer Gruppe, also die Summe der Kräfte, die die Mitglieder an sie binden. Sie erhöht Kommunikation, Zufriedenheit und Verbleib. Auf die Leistung wirkt sie jedoch nur dann positiv, wenn die Gruppennormen leistungsorientiert sind; in einer Gruppe mit niedrigen Normen verstärkt hohe Kohäsion gerade die Zurückhaltung. Übermässige Kohäsion begünstigt zudem Gruppendenken und die Abschottung gegenüber der Umwelt.
