Intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation arises from the activity itself: from interest, curiosity and the experience of competence and self-determination. According to the self-determination theory of Deci and Ryan it flourishes where autonomy, the experience of competence and social relatedness are satisfied. It leads to greater persistence, creativity and quality than external incentives do. Leadership cannot create it, but it can make it possible; through control and reward it can also destroy it.
