Travel rule

The travel rule requires that information on the originator and the beneficiary accompany transfers of crypto-assets, as has long been the case in conventional payments. It rests on Recommendation 16 of the Financial Action Task Force. FINMA implements it particularly strictly: even for transfers to an unsupervised wallet, the power of disposal must be established. The rule impedes anonymous use but is applied very unevenly across jurisdictions.

Die Travel Rule verlangt, dass bei der Übertragung von Kryptowerten Angaben zu Auftraggeber und Begünstigtem mitgeliefert werden, wie dies im klassischen Zahlungsverkehr längst gilt. Grundlage ist Empfehlung 16 der Financial Action Task Force. Die FINMA setzt sie besonders streng um: Auch bei Überweisungen auf eine nicht beaufsichtigte Wallet ist die Verfügungsberechtigung nachzuweisen. Die Regel erschwert die anonyme Nutzung, wird international jedoch sehr uneinheitlich angewendet.
