An underlying interest is the need, motive or concern of a party that lies behind a position, such as liquidity, planning certainty, reputation or the continuation of the business relationship. Interests are the key to a consensual solution: while positions may contradict each other, interests are often compatible or complementary. Eliciting them through open questions is a core task of mediation.
