The internal control system (ICS) is the totality of processes, methods and measures ordered by the board of directors and executive management to ensure orderly business operations, reliable financial reporting and compliance with the law. In companies subject to an ordinary audit, the auditors verify the existence of the ICS (Art. 728a CO). The international reference framework is the COSO model, with the levels of control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and monitoring.

Das interne Kontrollsystem (IKS) ist die Gesamtheit der vom Verwaltungsrat und der Geschäftsleitung angeordneten Vorgänge, Methoden und Massnahmen zur Sicherung eines ordnungsgemässen Geschäftsgangs, verlässlicher Finanzberichterstattung und der Einhaltung von Gesetzen. Bei ordentlich revidierten Gesellschaften prüft die Revisionsstelle die Existenz des IKS (Art. 728a OR). Referenzrahmen ist international das COSO-Modell mit den Ebenen Kontrollumfeld, Risikobeurteilung, Kontrollaktivitäten, Information und Überwachung.
